INSTRUCTIONS FOR LODGING A PASSPORT APPLICATION IN THE UK.

The majority of Australian passport renewals can be submitted by post and do not require the passport holder to visit a Passport Office. You can start a renewal application using the online application form here.

If you are unsure of the type of passport renewal you require please refer to the table at the bottom of this page to determine which type of application you will be lodging and which form you require.

If you are required to lodge an application in person please call 020 7887 5816 between the hours of 0900 - 1200, Monday - Friday to make an appointment.

The Passport Office at the Australian High Commission in London is open for appointments from 0930 - 1530 Monday to Friday.

Completed applications can be lodged in person at the Edinburgh office but they do not accept postal applications, these must be sent to the London office. The Edinburgh Office does not operate an appointment system.

If you are replacing an Australian passport please note that your previous passport will be cancelled and returned to you. You should check the status of any visas in your cancelled passport with the authority which issued them, i.e. the relevant embassy or the Home Office for UK visas as we cannot transfer visas into new passports.

COMPLETING APPLICATIONS ONLINE

All passport applications completed online at www.passports.gov.au must be printed by the applicant and lodged with the passport office together with relevant supporting documents, e.g. citizenship certificate, birth certifcate, fee, etc. There is currently no way of lodging an Australian passport application electronically (online).

PASSPORTS LODGED WITH THE U.K. BORDER AGENCY

We are unable to contact the U.K. Border Agency on your behalf in order to expedite the return of your Australian passport. You will need to liaise directly with that agency concerning the return of your passport as we are unable to issue a further travel document to you.

If you book travel outside the United Kingdom for business or personal travel whilst your passport is with the UK Border Agency, you should be aware that there is no facility for you to be issued with another Australian passport or travel document.

If you need to travel urgently and you require the return of your passport, you will have to liaise directly with the UK Border Agency. Please be aware that your passport may not be released to you unless you provide written advice confirming that you wish to withdraw your visa application and you may also forfeit the application fee. You are advised to discuss these issues with the UK Border Agency.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

Applicants who are providing a citizenship certificate as proof of citizenship which does not detail date and place of birth, must provide original birth certificate, officially translated where necessary.

INCOMPLETE OR INCORRECT APPLICATIONS

If your application is lodged by mail and is incomplete or incorrect (e.g. unacceptable photographs), we will return the application form and supporting documents to you by special delivery for which a charge of £5.00 will be made. If you lodge your application in person and it’s incomplete or incorrect, the application will be handed back to you and you will be required to make another appointment to re-lodge the application.
